BGE

S1

Our S1 course is based around developing the skills needed across the 4 areas covered in Design and Technology.

Over the course they will cover the following topics:

  • Wooden Phone Stand
  • Graphic Sketching
  • Desktop Publishing Logo
  • Acrylic Stand Design
  • Engineering – Energy
  • Metal Keyring

S2
In S2 we are looking for pupils to build on the skills learnt in S1 and build their own designs and bring out their creativity.

Over the course of S2 they will cover the following topics:

  • Desk Tidy Design folio and Manufacture
  • Desktop Publishing – Halloween Disco Ticket
  • Engineering – Structures
  • Baxters Soup Challenge
  • Key Rack

S3

In S3 pupils have the option to pick from the following three courses currently.

  • Design and Manufacture
  • Practical Woodwork
  • Engineering Science

Design and Manufacture

Design and manufacture is based around building the class’s creativity and developing their own ideas to manufacture. Over the course of the year they will work on design folios and manufacturing their designs.

There is 5 main topics that they will cover:

  • Design Unit
  • Introduction to working with wood (Alongside designing)
  • Introduction to working with metal (alongside designing)
  • Introduction to working with plastic (alongside designing)
  • Final design and manufacture project.

Across all topics pupils will be working towards a design brief. They will learn the basic skills required to progress onto:

  • N4/5 Design and Manufacture

Course Expectation

  • Pupils need to be willing to sketch and design before being able to get into the workshop
  • Hoodies removed before entering the workshop
  • Googles worn when in the workshop at all times

Practical Woodwork

Practical Woodwork is based around giving pupils a practical, workshop based learning experience. Pupils will learn and practice a range of woodworking techniques, and use a range of hand and machine tools; correctly, accurately and safely. Pupils will also develop skills in reading technical drawings, measuring and marking out, cutting, shaping and finishing materials. The core skills learned in this course will help to develop their skills for work, and also enhance their further learning if they choose to progress to N4 or N5 Practical Woodwork in their senior phase.

During the course pupils will cover:

  • Flat-frame construction
  • Carcase construction
  • Machining/turnery
  • Finishing
  • Overall assembly

Across all topics pupils will learn the basic skills required to progress onto:

  • N4/5 Practical Woodwork

Course Expectations

  • Adhere to the health and safety contract (link to be placed to health and safety contract)
  • Hoodies removed before entering the workshop
  • Googles worn when in the workshop at all times

Engineering Science

In this course students will learn to create solutions to everyday problems. This course will introduce students to a range of engineering principles. Engineering Science is a study of the roles of engineers in society, and of the knowledge and skills modern engineers are likely to have.

During the course pupils will cover topics:

  • Systems
  • Engineering jobs
  • Engineering impacts
  • Electronic and digital control
  • Mechanisms
  • Structures
  • Pneumatics

Across all topics pupils will learn the basic skills required to progress onto:

  • N4/5 Engineering Science

Course Expectation

  • Engineering Science is recommended as a pupil choice along with Mathematics, Physics and/or Computing Science – it should not be seen as a replacement for other science subjects.
  • Strong skills in Mathematics are required to succeed in Engineering Science.
  • Meeting deadlines and being resilient are important features of being successful in this course.
